Kingsley hickman

Born in the UK, raised in California, and with a BS in Aerospace Engineering from California State Polytechnic University of Pomona, Kingsley embraces the intertwined connections of math and music education. He has studied under jazz saxophonists Kevin Garren and Brian Scanlon of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band; and classical saxophonist Dr. Lori Huff. He appears regularly with the Gold Coast Wind Ensemble and performs with the Corona Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Chamber Choir when called upon. During his collegiate studies, he served as principal saxophonist of the audition-only Wind Ensemble, Chamber Saxophone Ensembles, and directed the 50+ person “Bronco” athletics performance ensemble. His tenure as director saw increased enrollment as he led the band to several on-and-off campus performances, most notably the Disneyland Community Arts Showcase.

Within the Conejo Valley Unified School District, Mr. Hickman has experience teaching 4th- through 8th-grade instrumentalists. Kingsley directs the “Redwood Band Ensemble”, an afterschool program of beginning and advanced band classes targeted towards students at Acacia, Aspen, Glenwood, Madrona, and Wildwood Elementary School. He has served as a woodwind specialist at Redwood Middle School, Colina Middle School, Fillmore Middle School and Los Cerritos Middle School, covering music theory and instrument-specific instruction to advancing musicians; and provided woodwind-targeted direction for the award-winning marching bands of Thousand Oaks High School, El Camino Real Charter High School, Oak Park High School and Adolfo Camarillo High School. He currently works alongside Adam Payne as the Assistant Band Director for the Redwood Middle School Viking Band.

After years of participating as a camper and volunteering as a counselor, Kingsley teaches the “Level 1” band for the Conejo Valley Music Camp. This summer music camp invites students of varying ages and abilities to explore music technology, chamber performance opportunities, specialty classes with guest educators, ensemble listening skills, and coaching from passionate youth volunteers. Kingsley regularly offers a first-hand saxophone experience at the “Saxophone Petting Zoo” where all interested students are introduced to a saxophone mouthpiece and its many sounds. After a brief workshop on forming the correct embouchure and appropriate breath support, musicians meet the 6+ instrument saxophone family and produce their first sounds.

Kingsley worked for the math tutoring company, Mathnasium, for half a decade as an instructor and Center Director, teaching and overseeing the implementation of a K-12 curriculum to 120+ students.
